This article is tagged with: ales, drink, pubs, train stations

This weekend a few of us took to the trains in a recreation of the pub crawl route featured on Oz and James drink to Britain.

For our purposes, to make it logistically less complicated, we started out in Leeds, took the train out to the furthest stop – Stalybridge, and worked in through Huddersfield and Dewsbury from there. So I think we reversed the route they took in the show, but it worked for us because it allowed us to finish off in Leeds.

My personal preference was the Stalybridge buffet bar pub, as I felt that it had the best ambience and choice of beers. Each pub was, I would say, equally busy, their popularity having increased recently thanks to the television programme and people like us training the route.

We had some good, exceptionally well priced, pub grub in Stalybridge, then trained it to Huddersfield, where we sampled some more good ales and headed off to Dewsbury, our last stop before Leeds. By that time it was getting fairly dark (despite having started off at mid-day) and sadly I think the beer-and-no-water combination had given me a cracking dehydration headache, but I still found the whole day cracking good fun.

Certainly recommended for any ale drinkers who are around the area. At around 13 quid return the ticket is good value, too and each train ride is short enough not to be any issue.
