Royal Wedding announced

In the good-news story of the year, it was announced today that Prince William is to marry long-term girlfriend Kate Middleton next year. The marriage will be somewhere in London in Spring or Summer. The two met at St Andrews University and – excluding a brief pause – have been together since. The engagement ring was that of the Prince’s mother, Diana.
The two gave an interview for the press and came across very well. The feelings of excitemetn were plain to see and there was good humour, but there was also the correct amount Royalness to it.
Congrats to both, and now awaiting the build up to the Royal Wedding next year.

Update – It was announced on 23rd November that the wedding will be on Friday April 29th in Westminster Abbey. This will be a Bank Holiday.

Four remain in Grand Prix title fight

A red-bull one-two clinched the constructors’ title for the team, leaving the drivers’ championship to be decided in Abu Dhabi. Vettel took the win with Webber in second place. Alonso’s (slightly lucky IMO) 3rd place leaves him in the best position to win the championship, whereas Hamilton’s determined 4th place gives a slim chance of him still being in the running, but in reality a lot of things would need to go his way for that to happen. Button – who finished 5th after an unfortunate qualifying (which had its own follow-up incidents) now cannot retain his title for a second year.

As it stands, Alonso has an 8 point lead over Mark Webber going in to the final race, with Vettel 7 points back on that. This means that if Alonso finishes 2nd or better, he’s done it, and if not, it’s a bit more open. I’d much prefer to see Webber take the title, so we’ll just have to cross fingers and see how it all pans out on the 14th in the final race of the season.

Baby buggy black market

Apparently there is an increasing black market in the sale of baby buggies. It sounds like, now that some buggies are retailing for pretty high prices, thieving scroats now believe it’s acceptable to take them from other people. Sigh. The most common thefts are from the home, but cars are also being targeted, so make sure you hide your buggies away. Not surprisingly, it’s popular models like the Silver Cross 3D and Quinny Zapp that are being targeted.

Times are a-changing

It’s that time of the year again folk when British Summer Time ends. We mark the end of summer in the traditional way – by turning the clocks back by one hour. I think that the purpose of this is so that it’s lighter in the mornings when folk need that extra push to get up, though a recent survey of folk in Scotland suggested that over half of Scots would prefer to just stay on BST all year round. I can see the point in that – I’m not greatly convinced that having a bit more light in the morning helps out that much, and the price is that it’s dark in the evening ridiculously early, when you might otherwise want to go out or something. Of course the impact of such a change varies across the country, but for us, it might at least mean that Niamh isn’t waking up at 4am (instead of the 5am she’s been doing recently!)

33 Chilean miners rescued

In what is probably the good news story of the year so far, all 33 trapped Chilean miners were rescued yesterday in an operation that took 69 days and culminated in the extraction of rescuer Manuel Gonzalez. You can read a timeline of the rescue here, and see a video of the events here. President Sebastian Pinera, who visited the mine numerous times and greeted the rescued miners, has pledged for better mining safety. Since initial expectations were bleak, there couldn’t really have been a better outcome to this event.
