Oh dear lord. McAuley Catholic High School in Doncaster has proposed a move to clip-on ties for their kids for “safety reasons”. Apparently, there is a concern that kids might be strangled by ties that get caught up in “something”. Hmm. Funny, kids have been wearing real ties to schools for, what, hundreds of years now. I wonder what the number of tie-strangulation incidents actually is. I suspect it’s somewhere close to the zero mark. Sigh. Apparently this is a growing trend.
There’s a facebook group protesting against the introduction of the ties. It’s good to see that some folk actually agree that it’s a stupid plan (their stance seems to be more of a waste of money, which is also true.)
Really though isn’t this just typical of today’s nannying state?

As owner of the group i have to say I agree
Regardless of whether people think this is health and safety gone mad etc etc. the school have decided this as the best course of action.
In my day if the school and the teachers told you something you did it without question. These kids think they have too much of a say in things these days and it shouldn’t be like this. More discipline from the parents and the schools I say.
If they are protesting in a reasonable manner I don’t see any issue with that, especially when something is introduced for a ridiculous reason.
I’m suprised that there isn’t more support from the parents. Personally I’d be annoyed as a parent if I had bought a load of perfectly good real ties to be told I had to replace them with clip-ons.
In 2008 there were 29 school tie-related deaths in school and 4 school tie-related deaths outside of school (in effect that the children had commited suicide by using the school tie).
Now I’m sure you will agree 33 deaths that could have been prevented by clip on ties just shows that they are worth it and any pathetic posturing from kids who think they aren’t cool cannot deny this fact.
Your source for that number would be good. 29 deaths across the entire country sounds like a statisitcally irrelevant number of people, so I’m surprised to hear it listed.
You could probably pluck a similar figure out of the air for the number of people who died falling out of trees, or even the number of people who died as a result of coconuts falling on their heads out of trees whilst on holiday in a coconut producing country.
You seem very interested in pushing the clip-on ties, do you have some vested interest going on here?
I say ditch the ties altogether! Since when have ties anything to do with learning. Indeed speaking as a bloke – I need all the blood & oxygen I get into my head!
What next, clip on shoelaces? It’s a good school (I go) but I think they’re pathetic.
Im fed up of this nonesense.
its a tie for gods sake, theres more important things in the world we should be campaining for rather than a silly tie in one stupid school. I go this school and as I was in year 11 I didn’t have to have the tie as I would be leaving/sixth form. However, if they got their old ties back they would NOT wear them properly, and the majority of them do wear the clip on ties in a sensible matter. You just get the few idiots who thing they’re “cool” by wearing them on lower buttons. What they don’t realise is that when you go into the world of work, if your told to wear something, you have to regardless if it looks terrible. You can’t start a facebook petition then you would look pathetic which is what all of you are doing now.
there are several advantages to the clip on ties
1. they are quicker to put on
2. they look uniform
3. they are safer
4. they prevent pranks like peanutting
5. they look neater
6. they prevent students tieing them low or loose
7, they force kids to do the top button so shirts look better too
8. they last longer as there is no fraying due to continued doing up or off
