Mr Mist’s Blog

It’s very sensible

The modern world

Handily, Phil popped round after work last week and helped us out by sorting the plumbing for the dishwasher. This is good because I reckon it took a lot less time than it would have taken me on my own. So that’s merrily washing the dishes now. woo, we’re back in the modern age!

Talking of modern, we picked up a cheapish CD player from price-drop TV last week too, as well as a cordless drill set. The cd player works, the drill works, but the drill recharger doesn’t. Which is a bit pesky. It’ll have to go back or something. Needs sorting out tomorrow. Bit annoying though as I wanted to sort out some bits and pieces around the house this weekend and haven’t been able to.

In other progress, I bought a Netgear Powerline HDXB101 starter set today, for Ethernet over the power cables. Now, it seems to work, but for some reason the blue light flickers. According to the manual, the blue light is meant to be on all the time. But it flickers. It flickers when there is no traffic and it flickers (in time with the IP activity light) when there is traffic. I can find no documentation to explain why it should do this, aside from a random comment on a forum that says in another powerline product that it means “activity”. But then why have two activity lights? Anyway I copied a few files around and it seemed to be consistent enough - managed 3Gig windows transfer without dropping etc.. If you know what the light means please let me know!

The point being though, to make it possible for the Qnap TS101 gadget that I’ve ordered to sit in the study, and be a printer server, without needing to run a cable from the hallway. Hopefully it will do otherwise it’ll have to go back to the shop.

And that’s about that for now.
