We woke up this morning to hear that a massive bridge that spanned the Mississippi with 8 lanes of highway had collapsed, near Minneapolis, Minnesota. Luckily half the bridge was out of action, but there were still somewhere around 50 vehicles on the bridge itself, and a train underneath which was crushed by one of the sections. Sadly at least 4 people have died, likely more, as the rescue operation strangely stopped as soon as night fell. Some people are known to still be trapped in vehicles at the moment.
Here’s a photo of the bridge which the photographer (unknown) released into the public domain.

I think it’s actually fairly remarkable that the loss of life hasn’t been greater, considering the massiveness of the event. Hopefully the area will recover as quickly as is possible.
