Cradle - Book review

Saturday, January 29th, 2005

Book 1/50. Finally. :D

Cradle [amazon.co.uk] by Arthur C. Clarke and Gentry Lee.

This was a good read. It was, I thought, quite slow to get started but after the first few pages the pace picks up and then keeps rolling towards the end. The later section of the book was very engaging.

It took quite a while to get through thanks, I think, to some flowery language, but is worth sticking with in my opinion.

3.5 / 5

Some maths -

1 book out of 50 = 2% !
373 out of 15000 pages = 2.48%

This entry is part of the read fifty books challenge for the year.

Jerry Springer Opera

Monday, January 10th, 2005

So the BBC show the Jerry Springer Opera and thousands of people are up in arms protesting over it. One group is even bringing a blasphemy prosecution against the BBC for it [news.bbc.co.uk]. I find it really odd that people have so much time on their hands to even be affected by these things. Surely it’s the BBC’s remit to provide obscure, challenging programming and such and push the boundarys of acceptability, or are we to be left with blandness that everyone can consider "acceptable"?

Weather

Saturday, January 8th, 2005

The weather seems strangely over the top this year. There is an awful lot of wind and rain here in the UK. Carlisle is under water [news.bbc.co.uk] and cut off, and various roads are closed or have had trucks blown over on them. It’s all very mad. The trains around here are not running either.
