Film Review - King Arthur

Sunday, August 15th, 2004

A new take on an old story. This time, Arthur lives in the Roman occupied British lands, and his knights are slaves to the Roman Empire.

It’s interesting to see something a little novel in the way the old myth is presented. I liked it. The cinema was, unfortunately, freezing, which tended to distract me a little and take my attention away. So I did find some bits of the film a tad long, and my interest waned a few times.

Nice grainy pictures, and lots of battle scenes. That’s that really.

7 or so out of 10.

Film review - 13 going on 30

Sunday, August 15th, 2004

Thirteen going on Thirty is something like a version of Big for the 2000 generation, with a female lead instead of a male one.

Jenna (Jennifer Garner) is your average 13 year old (apparently) who just wants to be one of the popular kids. When her party goes all wrong, a wish of hers to be 30 is granted, and she grows big overnight.

Then cue the trials of being a 30 year old, and the comedy ensues. Along with the sorting out her true love, of course.

It’s actually all right. I fairly enjoyed it, though it was insanely predicatable.

6/10.

Film Review : I, Robot

Thursday, August 12th, 2004

Will Smith stars as cop Del Spooner, a man who distrusts all things robotic, who is assigned to investigate an apparent suicide in which a robot is the prime suspect. However, robots can’t harm humans.. or can they?

This film was apparently inspired by the novel of the same name, though from hearsay it does not bear much resemblence to it.

Either way, it’s a pretty good film. Smith and the other actors do pretty well, the acting is fairly solid and the characters are good. Even the robot is believable as a “person”, as it were, so I think it works well.

The special effects are good quality. Only at one point during a car sequence did I think “hmm, that looks pretty fake”. The rest of the time it was seemlessly done. If any bits were completely computer generated scenes, then I couldn’t make them out from the real action.

It’s worth a go. 8/10.

Film Review - Thunderbirds

Wednesday, August 11th, 2004

What’s a sure way to ruin a classic series? That’s right, re-make it years later as a hollywood movie. ta-daaa. So, is that what they did with Thunderbirds?

Well, it is and it isn’t. The film is okay, it’s quite funny in places, but in others it’s argghsome in it’s groanability. The acting is actually a bit better than I expected, but some of the lines. Eeek.

There were good ship animations and it was exciting enough, you got a good sense of thunderbirdness. But then the car should not fly :|
So an average 5/10 or somesuch. Oui.

Film Review - The Stepford Wives

Thursday, August 5th, 2004

Today Mr mist saw The Stepford Wives. This is a perfectly acceptable comedy and a welcome relief after seeing a few duff films lately. Full of enjoyable one-liners, and visually very impressive (Scenery and actors :p ) it’s a nicely done remake of an older film, with a strong line up of characters that are pretty believable.

It seems that bits were cut that appered in the trailer, but the film was still very good, and engaging. Maybe a full-versioned DVD will appear at some point.

I’d give this film 4 out of 5. Go watch :)
