Film Review - Fahrenheit 9/11

Saturday, July 17th, 2004

This was a fairly interesting film/documentary. Michael Moore brings his own style to the events of September 11 and the Iraq war.

The film makes no apologies for being completely biased and one-sided. Don’t see this film expecting to see a full and complete expose into the activities around terrorism and the war, because you wont get it. What you will get is an entertaining insight into some of the more odd things around the war and Bush.

I’d say the first half of this film is probably the best half. It tries to cover a lot of angles and I found that the more interesting bits were when he looked at facts rather than emotions. There was a funny example of Bush sitting in a kids’ classroom whilst being told about the planes hitting the tower, insights into what happened to the Bin Laden family, and various things about weapons and oil contracts, but I felt that the film tailed off when it started interviewing soldiers and families of soldiers.

Yes, these people are emotionally charged and they have deep involvment in the war at a very fundamental level, but they are also bound to feel a certain way, especially those who have lost family members. And to a great extent I cannot know what they are feeling so it is pointless for me to sit and watch them for 40 minutes.

I’d probably give this film about 2.5 out of 5. Some bits better than others.

Film Review - The Notebook

Monday, July 5th, 2004

Yes, an old fashioned weepy movie. Well, especially near to the end. This is one of those "what can love conquer?" type films, with a working class type chap finding himself a rich girl and falling in love. Can their love get past the class boundries and give them a happily ever after? Watch and find out.

It’s entertaining stuff, fairly predictable but always moving quickly enough so that you maintain interest. I enjoyed it, but you should probably go prepared to shed a tear at the end. Good, solid, romancy stuff.

I should say around 3 out of 5 for this.

Film Review - Confidences Trop Intimes

Monday, July 5th, 2004

This is a French (subtitled) film in which a woman, looking for a shrink, mistakenly knocks on the door of a Tax lawyer. She begins to tell him her depest secrets and describe the problems in their relationship, as he assumes the role as Mr shrink. Does he confess all?

Well, yes, actually he does, which kinda makes the film a bit weird. But still. They jabber on at each other and occasionally the psycho type husband pops up to add a moment of drama to the proceedings. The drama is needed because, strangely for a film which sounds as though it could have some potential for comedy and suspense, the excitement level offered is fairly low. Unfortunately the random and weird appearances by the husband do little to improve matters, as they are just too bizarre.

Billed as a comedy, I probably had two laughs during the whole film. It came across as over long, dull, and, in the end, rather flat, because nothing impressive was made of the ending, either.

I’d give it 1 out of 5.
