Film Review - Dear Frankie

Wednesday, July 28th, 2004

In this Scottish film, a young boy who writes letters to his father he believes is away on a ship experiences being with his dad for the first time as his ship comes in to dock.

Of course, it’s not quite that simple. Really, his mum has been replying to his letters all the boy’s life, his real father having never seen them. How can she solve the dilemna? Will his mother have to let her emotional guard down to solve the problem?

Emotionally interesting stuff. I’d go see it when it comes into release if you can find it. Yes. 4/5.

Film Review - The Prince And Me

Wednesday, July 28th, 2004

This was a pretty good, lighthearted, uplifted film. A fair mix of comedy and slush, where a rowdy Prince going to sow his royal oats meets up with a down-to-earth US girl (Julia Stiles). Will she tame him? Will he ever settle down? Will they live happily ever after?

And such. It’s just nice to watch really. Doesn’t overdo anything and keeps you smiling. 3 out of 5 I reckon.

Film Review - Mean Girls

Saturday, July 17th, 2004

Not sure how to describe this one. Pretty funny teen comedy about college social groupings, misfits, in-crowds and bitchyness, mixed in with the usual themes of parties and whatnot. I found it surprisingly good compared to what I was expecting of it (though I was not expecting a whole lot tbh).

Yes, erm. Go see it, have a laugh, don’t think too much about it :D

Film Review - Around The World In 80 Days

Saturday, July 17th, 2004

This is a comedy with Steve Coogan as Phileas Fogg and Jackie Chan as his assisstant Passepartout attempting to cross the globe in 80 days.

Of course it can’t be that simple, Chan is trying to save his village by returning a Jade Budda, but others are determined to prevent him, and to prevent Fogg from completing his trip on time.

So, naturally, Chan’s skills will come in handy to fight off the bad guys.

I think this film is everything you could expect from the bringing together of Chan and Coogan. A seemingly odd paring they work quite well and it’s very funny in places.

3 out of 5 for this.

Film review - The Lady Killers

Saturday, July 17th, 2004

Tom Hanks stars in a remake of an older film of the same name. Here we see a gang of thieves attempting to rob a gambling den of its funds by tunnelling underground from a basement they are renting from an unsuspecting old lady.

This film was very funny and entertaining. Tom Hanks I felt was excellent as the quiet - and yet not quiet - gang leader, and the supporting cast also put in very good performances making believable characters.

The comedy itself was of a good standard, and the storyline was clever and managed to avoid being too predicatble for something that could be a very cliched area of film if treated badly.

All in all I would say go see this film, I’d give it 4 out of 5.
