America America

Thursday, October 31st, 2002

In today’s bizarre America related news… Canadians are warned against visiting America [news.bbc.co.uk]. Yes, a travel advisory against going to the free new world. It’s more specifically for Canadians of Middle Eastern descent, but still the world must be coming to something when people are warned against going to the US by one of its closest neighbours.

Mauve

Wednesday, October 30th, 2002

What is mauve anyway? I mean why the need for such an obscure colour? Couldn’t people just pick one of the more usual colours that stand either side of it?

I had been noticing it every now and again, and then it was picked up on in Slashdot [slashdot.org], that referer logs as I have here that are automatically being created are being spammed by porn sites, basically by inserting a fake link from their porn site into people’s blogs, so that they then get a link back. Frankly I find it bizarre that anyone would go to so much effort to get their site linked to from one which a) only gets a few hundred hits a day and b) is hardly likely to turn any great percentage of those hits into clickthroughs. But, hey, I guess these people have minds that operate slightly differently from the rest of society.

If it gets to the stage where it ever became an issue, it’s a simple enough task to remove the list, but then I would miss out on amusing links like this one [anordinaryboy.blogspot.com] from someone who I can only imagine has taken my "please leave a comment" message slightly more seriously than it’s intended. It seems that he finds this "nauseating". To which I can only suggest that, if he (or indeed any reader) finds my writing "sub par" and that my requests for comments make him (or you) ill, that he (or you) really shouldn’t read my blog. It’s not compulsory after all and I have never claimed to be in line for the next pulitzer or booker prize.

In real news, some woolly rhino bones have been unearthed in Staffordshire [news.bbc.co.uk] noted for being a most impressive ice-age discovery. Lovely.

That’s all for today folk. Please leave comments..

It’s Ridiculously windy [news.bbc.co.uk]. Half of the fence here has blown down. Bits of stuff are flying everywhere.

I got an offer accepted yesterday on a house in Sheffield. Yaay. Now the really tedious bit begins. Arrggg.

Good luck to me.

Strikes off

Saturday, October 26th, 2002

The first set of firefighter strikes that were planned for next week have been cancelled [news.bbc.co.uk]. The hope is that progress can be made towards a resolution in the pay issue before the next set of strikes, but they will go ahead unless something is sorted out first.
