Race Me

Sunday, July 21st, 2002

Michael Schumacher has won the French Grand Prix and taken this year’s world championship in the process [news.bbc.co.uk]. He’s equalled the five championship record confirming his place as one of the best ever racing drivers. Some controversy entered into it because leader Raikkonen went off on an oil-covered corner and Schumacher overtook apparently under yellow flags. So there may be appeals to follow, but it looks as though he has taken the Championship for another year.

In China 22 people have been killed by egg sized hailstones [news.bbc.co.uk]. 200 people were injured and much damage was caused in the storms too. Most of the people were killed as buildings fell over. Huge hailstones are rare but not unheard of.

Friday Five (On Saturday evening) [Fridayfive.org].

1. Where were you born?

Leicester.

2. If you still live there, where would you rather move to? If you don’t live there, do you want to move back? Why or why not?

I still live there right now. I would rather move either somewhere nearer my job, or somewhere nearer people I like, or both. Currently I’m having a crisis deciding what to do about a house and whatnot.

3. Where in the world do you feel the safest?

In bed.

4. Do you feel you are well-traveled?

Somewhat. I’ve been around the world to various places and have been to lots of places in the UK too. I could easily travel more though. The US and Canada I’ve not explored, and lots of other places.

5. Where is the most interesting place you’ve been?

Probably Thailand, then Egypt. Both places were so different from back home, which makes them interesting.

Make me complete

Friday, July 19th, 2002

Today of course the main news story was the Shipman inquiry result indicating that he killed no less than 215 people [news.bbc.co.uk] which makes him the UK’s biggest serial killer, ever.

BBC News online is changing formats [news.bbc.co.uk]. There will be a world version and a UK version, both apparently to offer different methods of accessing the various content, so it’s easier to get to more relevant stories. I can’t say I’ve ever really found it that difficult to do that anyway, but I suppose progress is good. Hopefully.

By the way there is no cheap plastic stuff this week because I am at a friend’s house for the weekend and I forgot the digital camera (and there’s no usb port to plug into even if I had the camera, and the plastic stuff, which I don’t)…

That’s all for just now, more tomorrow I expect. :)
P.S. Thanks to a longish phonecall yesterday, I am feeling slightly less depressed now. Which is good.

Under

Thursday, July 18th, 2002

Six Feet Under is leading the Emmy Prime Time awards in America [news.bbc.co.uk] with 23 nominations. Which is good as the programme is most impressive. I highly recommend watching it and if you haven’t already seen it you should make an effort to.

On my side of things, my odd moods continue. Nothing has really changed. I have a desk at work now though, if I’ve not mentioned that already.

Pots

Wednesday, July 17th, 2002

Pots come in many shapes and sizes. So do people. But I don’t care about any of that, I just want people around me who I can be happy with and can trust and find it easy to talk to. Where do I find these people? Why is it that when I do find these people, they invariably seem to live on the other side of the world, or they have a 24hr job, or something. How do you alter reality to give yourself a little more enjoyment?

Some things I noticed today are -

In the US a man has been charged with the felony of animal abuse after grilling a kitten [reuters.co.uk]. Is it just me or is this *amazingly* disturbing behaviour? I mean what the *hell* possesses someone to actually grill a kitten? How amazingly odd.

Also from August, Net and other communication providers will be required to allow government agencies to snoop on users [news.bbc.co.uk]. August 1st sees the activation of the original RIP act. At least the extra bits were stalled for a while. Still, UK folk, we can relax knowing that 1 in 10000 of us is being electronically surveyed in every form of communication from email through to mobile phone conversations…. Nice.
